Colors That Frame a Gaze

Click the image to view it at a larger size.
An Indigenous woman is portrayed wearing a large headdress of colorful feathers, looking straight ahead. The headdress dominates the image, but the gaze remains the point of connection. Adornment and expression tell different parts of the same presence. The environment is more than a background: it situates a relationship with territory, movement, and everyday life. We view the scene more thoughtfully when we remember that Indigenous peoples have many different histories, languages, and customs.
